Writing Woes Versus Writing Wonders: Increasing Writing Experiences for Adolescents
“I don’t have the time to teach writing!” “I don’t have the time to grade writing!” “How do I motivate reluctant writers?” Teachers have either experienced these woes of teaching writing or have heard teachers complain about the woes of teaching writing. How do we turn these teaching woes into wonders?

In this session, we will discuss and execute the three F’s of writing: Fluency, Form, and Focus. We will explore what role these three types of writing play in the daily classroom and how they can be incorporated in lessons without adding more work or stress on the teacher.

Finding Voices of Forgotten Children
Donte Woods-Spikes began his journey as an instructional Assistant in 2018. Immediately, he observed a noticeable imbalance taking place within daily operations. There was a high demand for academic achievement, while the students consistently struggled to receive passing scores. Donte attributed this to the very limited time allotted to developing connections with students beyond the curriculum. The following year, he utilized his free time as a teacher's aide to develop rapport with students and found that providing space to acknowledge & support emotional needs led to measurable academic achievement. Listen as author, speaker and activist Donte Woods-Spikes shares the barriers he uncovered, as well as the successes he witnessed in his attempt to change his school for the better.
